Ontario-Based Innovator Selected to Advance in the ARCTIC Mining Hot Water Production Challenge

Vancouver, CANADA – March 15, 2018 — Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre and Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) today announced that Ontario-based Combustion & Energy Systems has been selected to advance in the ARCTIC Mining Hot Water Production Challenge. Combustion & Energy Systems’ Condensing Economizer technology is designed to capture waste heat from flue gas stacks of natural-gas fired industrial boilers. A full-scale field demonstration could improve efficiency resulting in an annual reduction of 30,000 tonnes of CO2e and 150,000 m3 of water.

As part of the Mining Hot Water Production Challenge process, Combustion & Energy Systems participated in a six-month sprint and received support to advance their technology. In the next stage of the challenge, their technology will be assessed for field testing and continue the process towards a full-scale field demonstration at an operating oil sands mining facility.

“The ARCTIC Challenge process has proven extremely effective in bringing together industry and entrepreneurs and delivering real-world solutions, increased efficiency, and decreased costs,” said Neil Huff, Managing Director of Foresight. “Combustion & Energy Systems demonstrates that Canada has a rich pool of talented innovators to draw from as we transition to a clean economy.”

“At COSIA we know that finding solutions to challenges, like our hot water production challenge, is accelerated when we can leverage partners like Foresight to discover innovators like Combustion & Energy Systems with promising technologies that could have significant benefits for reducing emissions and water usage,” said COSIA chief executive, Dr. Dan Wicklum.

The ARCTIC Mining Hot Water Production Challenge is sponsored by the federal and Alberta governments, in partnership with COSIA. Consulting partners Tessellate Inc. and The Delphi Group provided advisory services. The ARCTIC Challenge program is funded with support from Western Economic Diversification (WD) and the BC Innovation Council (BCIC).
